I'll Go Where You Want Me to Go

This is an arrangement of an altered version of an 1852 Shaker Hymn. I have always loved this hymn from our own hymnal, but hearing the tune to this hymn was captivating. I decided that it would be a fun one to do an arrangement of. The first verse is sung by a tenor soloist, joined by the tenors and basses, followed by the women singing the second verse. It is meant to flow like waves, stressing the first and fourth beats (in 6-8 timing). Enjoy!

It may not be on the mountain height
Or over the stormy sea,
It may not be at the battle's front
My Lord will have need of me.
But if, by a still, small voice he calls
To paths that I do not know,
I'll answer, dear Lord, with my hand in thine;
I'll go where you want me to go.
I'll go where you want me to go, dear Lord,
O'er mountain or plain or sea;
I'll say what you want me to say, dear Lord;
I'll be what you want me to be.

Perhaps today there are loving words
Which Jesus would have me speak
There may be now in the paths of sin
Some wand'rer whom I should seek.
O Savior, if thou wilt be my guide,
Tho dark and rugged the way,
My voice shall echo the message sweet;
I'll say what you want me to say.
I'll go where you want me to go, dear Lord,
O'er mountain or plain or sea;
I'll say what you want me to say, dear Lord;
I'll be what you want me to be.

There's surely somewhere a lowly place
In earth's harvest fields so wide
Where I may labor through life's short day
For Jesus, the Crucified.
So trusting my all to thy tender care,
And knowing thou lovest me,
I'll do thy will with a heart sincere:
I'll be what you want me to be.
I'll go where you want me to go, dear Lord,
O'er mountain or plain or sea;
I'll say what you want me to say, dear Lord;
I'll be what you want me to be.

I'll be what you want me to be.

This is the only arrangement that I have made for this song. I would guess if a women's quartet performed it, they would just alter the voices and sing some of them up an octave. Good luck! " ~ Lindy Kerby

I heard a women's quartet sing this and I loved the lilting, Irish feel to it. This rendition seems to for men? Is there an arrangement for women?" ~ Susan

I accompanied our choir with this piece for our closing number at Stake Conference. Many in the choir, myself included, teared up while singing it. It is such a beautiful tune to go with wonderfully inspiring words. I will add this to my collection of favorite music!" ~ Ruth Ann Williams

I am a member of the MHS Madrigals choir and I am graduating and leaving on a LDS mission to the Philippines during the summer. My bishop asked if I wanted to do a musical number and at first I was not sure what I wanted to do, but after hearing this I know that I wanted to do this one with my choir at my farewell. Thank you so much for creating and supplying this beautiful arrangement." ~ Jacob Horne
